Often the muting we hear in MIDI voices is due to phase cancellation that can
occur if
you play the same voice on two channels...
Imagine that you write X.
Someone else then writes X next to your X.
You see X X
You write another X and someone writes X over your X.
You see X
Where did the second one go? It is still there but it has been canceled out by
the
newer one.
Phase Cancellation can pulse - more sound to no sound...X to X X while being
played...
Using slightly different trumpets together and paired MIDI channels can solve
the
problem, as swell as panning and other techniques.
That's an important feature of the PDI Tone Generation system of the Rodgers
Organ...control over phase information in the organ stops is
controlled...including
phase shifting that occurs with the normal operation of swell shades in a pipe
organ.
