Good topic. We who have played for so many partings certainly should
know what we'd like for ourselves.
The first thing I want (even before choosing the music and musicians) is
the presence of two wonderful pastors who have been not only good
ministers, but also magnificent men to work with. Then come piano solos
by the three world-class pianists I've been blessed to serve alongside
in the last 20 years or so. Two choir anthems - "Hallelujah Chorus" and
"No More Night." A couple of congregational hymns. Duet by two
sopranos. Jury's still out on whether the organ will be played -- it's
needed for congregational singing but I'm not sure it would be a kind
thing to do to my wife and son. (If they want to, they can pop a disk
in the PR300 and let me play one of my own hymn fantasias.)
All those details are flexible, depending on circumstances. But there's
one thing that's a must: The benediction will be the Vocal Majority's
cut of "The Lost Chord."
