here's the information I have regarding these two pieces.....taken straight
from the books I used when i was going for my masters degree.
Eugène Gigout's "Grand Chorus Dialogue" is from a collection called "Six
Pièces", published in 1881. It was dedicated to Alphonse Mailly, who was a
pupil of Lemmens, and professor at the Brussels Conservatory. It's comprised of
two 'foundation+reeds' plans, one with and the other without pedal. The first
section grabs our interest, going from G Major, to D Major, going through D, F,
E-flat, and A-flat. A more linear theme develops, which precedes the return of
the 'march-type' theme in a minor, then a-flat minor, and G. The third section
has the manuals doing the same as in the opening, but in a more orchestral
style.
(all sources point to this being originally composed for manual AND pedal,
since the 5 other pieces in that collection are written for both)
As for Lemmens' pieces.......they all come from his "Ecole D'Orgue", published
in 1862. Again, all sources say the "Fanfare in D Major" was originally
composed for both manual and pedal. There are many pieces in that (thick) book
that are for manuals alone, but not the Fanfare.
If these books have small notes for the pedal, or no pedal part at all, they
may have been arranged that way, to simplify execution, for the faint-hearted
organists. Many times, pieces are simplified, and sometimes, the entire pedal
part is removed, and the piece is labelled as being for "manuals alone".
Sometimes, the pedal staff is simplified, and the note are placed as cue notes.
At any rate, the 2 pieces were definitely written for manuals and pedal, since
all copies sold stem from the originals.
