The list may be slow in posting your emails for the next few days....but
they will be posted.

I tried to write a coherent response to the percussion post, but kept
wandering off...

In 5 years we have gone from a silent society to a society where music
and noise is the norm.  Having been raised in a denomination where
silence was expected at all times in church, and with a family heritage
that may have included Quakers, it may time for churches to return to
silence with words and music interrupting the silence only for good
reason....

I am talking about real silence, here....getting rid of humming sound
systems, HVAC systems that bring the sound of rushing wind into church
as they cycle on or off, fluorescent lighting with singing ballasts.

Music has become the fabric of our lives rather than an occasional
Epicurean delight (Thank goodness for spell checkers)

It is our job as organists to stop being part of the background, to find
new music, to solicit people's opinion of what we play.  If you start
asking they may start listening.

Churches fail us too, last Sunday we premiered two new works without
fanfare in the bulletin or any comment from the pulpit. We often fall
into eh trap of being modest to the point of being ignored.
