This is a question that pops up from time to time.
The person asking often does not understand the full application of MIDI in its
use with the church organ.
MIDI is merely a quick and easy way to hook things up. Digital music
manufacturers working together came up with the idea and implemented it in a
few short years. Pipe organ builders, in business for centuries, have never
tried. Even today, with digital electronics being used in the control system
of most pipe organs, there still is not a recognized protocol.
How MIDI is used is what many people do not understand.
MIDI permits software of quite different manufacturers to be used in concert
with the software and hardware of others.
This results in organist being able to access libraries of voices, instruments
and sound effect very affordably.
The organist may also record their playing and then walk through the building
and listen to how one sounds as MIDI is used to play back what has been stored.
Organists may record the service improvisations, take a floppy disk home and
edit and publish the improv within hours of the creation of the music.
Organists may audition music by inserting a floppy into the sequencer and
listen to the organ.
Organists who are without orchestra in church may perform with MIDI orchestra.
When poeple ask if your organ has MIDI, they may be asking if you can play
strings, harp and electric piano from the organ console. Take time and explain
the possibilites!
