I'm there with ya! I like Christmas carols--I'm no Scrooge--but we tend to extend the season as far back as Halloween, taking the lead of our freiendly neighborhood retailers. There are some really good Advent hymns, and there are some lousy ones. There enough good ones that if uses judiciously, it causes us to long for thefew days before 25 December when carols will be played incessantly. Plus, the Advent songs help do what the season is supposed to do: prepare us spiritually for the arrival of the Christ child--and there's a lot more behind that than just a baby lying in a feeding box. We have two new Ministers of Worship and Arts at our Lutheran Church. One isa Lutheran but has little liturgical or hymnodic knowledge, and the other has 30 years of experience in non-denominational congregations. I've been spending the last few months helping them get up to speed in these areas. It's been a challenge, but they're coming around to seeing how the church calendar works and what music goes along with it. Our first midweek Advent service is this evening, and we have a mix of Adventand Christmas songs planned, all centered around prophecy and fulfillment. In my conservative and evangelical mind, that plan is satisfactory.
