We must keep in mind that the composers of long ago, left very little
indication as to registration. Bach himself, left almost no specific
registration indications. Over the years, we've become so used to hearing
pieces played a certain way (using certain stops) that we have somehow accepted
these are the set "norm", and we have established rules by these examples.
Mixtures, by their design, are used to add brilliance to the lower octaves, and
depth to the upper octaves, and there are definitely not meant to be used only
if 8.4.2 are drawn, or only if principals are in play. Mixtures may be used any
time.
