Charlie, I applaud your thinking about the16' Posuane/Bassoon. It does as
you say, add to pitch definition, vs. "Bombarde overload" ( which I say with
tounge in cheek." who dosn't get a thrill, when adding a 16' bombarde! ")
Using a quarter note walking bass in the pedal with the 16' Bassoon + mf-f
registration in a great old hymn like "Crown Him with Many Crowns" impartes
to the congregation a rythmic/melody line that they can't refuse. It's
muisic in the premordial sense. You just have to sing it! Thank God for
Bombardes! But, as you implied, sometimes too much of a good thing is too
much.
