[rodgersorganusers] Re: Adding external subwoofer to 577

Noel is correct: the extra channels with the RSS will make a big difference.

I have a 790BE that's using an external RSS (pre-Trillium), with the main
going through a Velodyne 12" powered subwoofer to two Rodgers .35 speakers.
The front RSS channels go to two more .35's, the rear to two 1.7's. The six
total channels are powered by three S200 amps.

This provides excellent sound in a home, and the Velodyne's controls and I/O
increase the flexibility quite a bit. Since it has both line and speaker
level inputs, I can go from an S200 to the Velodyne in speaker wire, then
use the onboard crossover to take anything below 80Hz so that the .35's work
in their sweet spot with the speaker level outputs. Among other things, this
means only one set of wires under the floor for the sub-satellite
arrangement.

My Velodyne goes to 17Hz +/- 3dB, and I can't go beyond halfway on the
subwoofer volume without stuff falling off the walls. A good balance is easy
to achieve. It's also quite small for what it produces - the cabinet is not
much larger than the speaker itself, so space is a non-issue.

BTW, I'm passing the two main channels through a Lexicon 110 to add some
space to the sound. In a living room, this makes a big difference. As good
as the RSS is, I was getting a sound like the pipes were right on top of me
without it. Using the Lexicon 110, I can get almost any effect, from next to
the chambers with a room behind, to an in-the-room wash of sound.

This setup is VERY flexible for home installations.

Cheers.
