Interesting experience Sunday afternoon...went to Felix Hell concert on new
pipe organ (greater love/lunacy hath no organist than to drive 150 miles in
pouring rain at very illegal speeds on unknown roads knowing that you'll be at
least 15 minutes late and will have to park on court house lawn...my wife may
run off with her dentist, too)...(did you know that Google lists over 500
entries for Felix?)... the concert was marred by two things, neither within the
control of the (excellent) performer: bad dry acoustics, and an instrument
that had been tuned too finely...it sounded tight, wiry, simply unrealistic.
The sound had no bloom, no life...it was just there. It could be
fixed...resurface the walls and ceiling of the huge room, and get a musician to
tune (detune?) the beast. Of course, they should have saved a lot of money and
just bought a Rodgers with or without pipe ranks so they could adjust these
aspects at will...why didn't they? The "purists" on the selection committee
didn't even consider, let alone audition, any electronic organ, yet this one
has three digital 32s and digital chimes.
