Finally, Gutenprint for RISC OS has been released. The high-quality
printer drivers are suitable for RISC OS 3.5 and higher and can be
used to print from any application that supports graphics printing via
the standard RISC OS printing system (!Printers), e.g., Draw,
ArtWorks, OvationPro, Impression, etc.
Gutenprint supports more than 750 printer models with its main focus
being on Epson inkjet printers. Please note that the Canon drivers in
particular do not offer photo-real quality and that Gutenprint only
supports the printing part of multi-function devices (devices that
typically including scanning, copying and fax capabilities). The full
list of supported printers can be found at:
http://www.mw-software.com/software/gutenprint/supported.html
The Gutenprint drivers support different media types (e.g., plain
paper and glossy photo paper) and offer an extensive range of manual
colour correction options (e.g., brightness, contrast, saturation, ink
density, grey balance) allowing you to fine-tune the output.
It should be noted that depending on the chosen quality settings and
the printer model Gutenprint requires a lot of RAM and processing
power. At least 64MB of RAM are recommended for high-quality printing,
plus a StrongARM or better an XScale or ARM9 processor. Gutenprint has
been tested on RiscPC, VRPC, Iyonix and A9Home systems. Please note
that even on the fastest RISC OS machines Gutenprint is rather slow
when printing at the highest quality settings.
Getting hold of the software

Upgrading from Gimp-Print
=========================
There are several reasons to upgrade from Gimp-Print to Gutenprint:
First of all, Gutenprint supports a huge amount of new printers on top
of those supported by Gimp-Print. But even if your printer is already
supported by Gimp-Print and you are not planning to buy a new one
soon, there are additional benefits from upgrading to Gutenprint:
- The overall print quality of Gutenprint is much improved compared to
Gimp-Print.
- Gutenprint supports printing using variable dot sizes and up 6 inks,
e.g., CMYK plus Photo C and Photo M (as used by many Epson photo
printers) or CMYK plus Red and Blue (used by the Epson R800).
- On a range of Epson printers Gutenprint finally supports borderless
printing, i.e., printing to the full paper area without any margins.
- Gutenprint supports various additional printer options, e.g.,
Quadtone inks and duplex printing (on suitable printers, e.g., the
Canon PIXMA iP4000), plus even more comprehensive colour correction
controls.
