I'd keep the Regional School out of it, but is there another group/groups that
could issue a press release on this?  CCSE or some other group?

This event is representative of the oppression and exclusion that exists in the
Rochester community.  Imagine an event like this that is intended to 'inform'
on both sides of the issue that systematically excludes the people being
affected.  Poor people of color are on the cusp of having their rights stripped
from them yet they will not be able to attend as it will cost $45 to get in the
door.  No "power breakfasts" for the city poor, just power politics.

Subject: [regional_school] RBJ Debate on Mayoral Control

RBJ event to focus on proposal for city schools
By NATE DOUGHERTY
Rochester Business Journal
February 19, 2010
Proponents and critics of a plan for city government to assume control of the
Rochester City School District will meet with experts on mayoral control for a
panel discussion in March.

The Rochester Business Journal Power Breakfast event, The Pros and Cons of
Mayoral Accountability for the Rochester City School District , is scheduled
for March 23 at the Rochester Plaza Hotel from 7:30 to 10 a.m.

The change in governance was proposed by Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy in
January. He outlined a five-year plan to return to neighborhood schools and
raise the graduation rate. Duffy will take part in the event March 23.

The Rochester Business Journal has assembled a panel of national and
educational leaders to share their views on the issue and answer questions.

The panel is to include Kenneth Wong, chairman of the education department at
Brown University and author of "The Education Mayor." The book looked at
mayoral control of urban school districts, showing that the system can increase
accountability and strengthen the educational system, though it is not
appropriate for every district.

Wong also holds a joint appointment at the Annenberg Institute for School
Reform and directs a 12-month program in urban education policy.

The panel also will include Dennis Walcott, deputy mayor for educational and
community development for New York City . Walcott oversees and coordinates the
city's Department of Education and also serves as liaison with community-based
groups and helps coordinate policies for youth programs and adult education.
New York City has mayoral control of its schools.

Margaret Raymond, director of the Center for Research on Education Outcomes at
Stanford University , will participate as well. The center analyzes education
reform efforts around the country and was launched at the University of
Rochester before moving to Stanford in 2000. A nationally recognized authority
on education reform, Raymond is researching the effectiveness of charter
schools, efforts to turn around low-performing schools and the achievement
gap.

Adam Urbanski, president of the Rochester Teachers Association, also will
participate. Urbanski has been critical of the proposal, saying it disregards
the will of parents and the community and will bring less money to city
schools. In addition to his role with the RTA, Urbanski is vice president of
the American Federation of Teachers.

Van White, a member of the city school board and critic of the mayor's plan,
has been invited to be on the panel as well.

Tickets for the conference are $45 per person or $360 for a table of eight.
More information is available at go.rbj.net/education.
