Chris was pretty spot on regarding such a project, but compressing classical music is often a tough job be it that it can be very dynamic. Although I'm just guessing, I don't assume it's real dramatic pieces your husband wants to listen to while going to sleep. So just play around with normalizing or the wave hammer. If normalizing seems too extreme give wave hammer a try and just compress the top end. Play around with the threshold and ratio until you find a good one size fits all setup you can save so that you can use it on everything he wants to compress. This should more or less level off the top end and reduce noticeable variations from song to song.

We have the disks, and we can install that easily enough on his computer. Is Sound Forge the proper tool, and what tools within Sound Forge itself would he need to use to accomplish his purposes.
