I am so glad that I checked messages before starting all of that stuff you
so graciously outlined, Jim. Okay Kim, First I have to tell you that there
is only one way to turn vo on and off. This is done when you have to go into
settings and manually set vo to be off or on. This is not a good way for
blind people, as you would then need sighted assistance to navigate the
menus to get it turned on again. I assume that vo is already on so you
won't need to do this now. Then there is a wonderful thing called a short
cut that does turn vo on and off without having to go into settings. One
thing to note is that this short cut has to be set up first in the settings
menu before it will work. Then there is a mute command that is already
setup by default. This short cut just turns off the vo speech but everything
else about vo still works. This is not good to use when handing your device
over to a sighted user, as it still requires the hand gestures that blind
users use to navigate. Use Jim's directions to get things going.
1 I assume that vo is already on so you won't need to do this.
2. After you configure the home button, you will be able to use tap tap tap
on the home button to turn vo on or off. this is a toggle.
3. muting vo is done by using three fingers slightly spaced apart and tap
tap on the screen.

1. . turning vo on for the first time

2. setting up the shortcut

3. Muting vo

No hunting around the screen is ever necessary.
