When there is an alert for your county, it will turn on, play a siren,
and then you'll hear a very clear synthesized voice giving the important
information. Its a variety of these synthesized voices that read all of
the other info, conditions, forecasts etc..

Severe Weather Awareness week starts March 5 but I thought I'd help you
get a head start since we are getting a nice visit this week from Spring.
A NOAA Alert weather radio is a great tool to help keep you safe in
severe weather. The current generation of weather radios can be set to
only alert for your county. The radio will turn on and play the audio
from the National Weather Service and once the broadcasted message is
done, the radio automatically turns off.
There isn't allot of technology in these radios, so its something you
might need help with for the first time setup. After that there is
nothing to configure and it has three AA batteries in case of a power
outage.
If you do have someone helping you, they'll just need to select the
state and county, and set the alert type to voice. No confusing codes to
enter as in older generations of weather radios.

The National Weather Service sends out a test signal on Wednesday at 11
AM and 7 PM. The test signal works the same as an alert, the weather
radio will activate and turn off when the broadcasted message is done. I
am very thankful for this weekly test because we learned that our
weather radio stopped working when we didn't hear the test one week. I
checked the radio and it was dead. They do postpone the test if there is
stormy weather on a Wednesday.
Its a great tool to have and I'm frequently finding people here in KC
that have never heard of this.
