Hate to burst your bubble, but just turning the computer off will not
protect it from a power surge.  If you have that problem in your area
you might call your electric company so they can come out and figure out
why. 
We had a problem soon after moving into our house, we called KCPL, and
they found that the transformer needed to be replaced.
