The fact that you tried the key on a newer computer, that quite likely has 
USB 2.0, suggests a defective key.

On the FreedomBox site, it states that there is a 30 day return policy in 
place for any defective equipment.

That is precisely the point: Before I purchased the product, I asked what
was required. The answer was, Windows XP. That was it. No other specs were
given. If you go to freedombox.info, the promo for the product says it will
work with any windows-based computer.
