Well, we store 1 or more values in "asset tag" column only.
We actually have an Assets Department. Anytime a 'big-ticket' item is bought
(anything valued 5 digits or more), the Assets people will put one or more
numbered stickers on the item. Once a year or so, the Assets people will run
around campus looking for these things, making sure they didn't end up in
someone's house. Any time an item is transferred between departments or
colleges, or it is being decommisioned, forms have to be filed out using the
asset numbers on the stickers.
As an example, we bought a Quantum Scalar i2000 tape library two years ago. Not
only did the library get an asset number, but so did each of the 4 tape drives
inside the library. Inside Racktables, I put a comma-delimited string of 5
numbers for the asset tag. *shrug* Only a couple of items have multiple
numbers. Some items have no numbers. I tried putting in 'none' for things that
have no numbers, to differentiate things that need to have its number entered
in, but there seems to be a strict uniqueness check that disallows multiple
items to have the same asset tag. :)
Thanks for help Dennis!
