When you have a new network switch created, it will have "SNMP port
finder" tab shown in orange. There you can fill in the SNMP (version 1)
community and run the tool. If the switch is reachable via SNMP and
known to the port finder (IOW, one of Catalyst models), you'll have all
ports and some other data filled in automatically. Once the tool
succeeds, the port finder tab goes away.

The port finder will try using FQDN attribute to reach the device and
fall back to the common name or assigned IP address, if FQDN is not set.
This feature doesn't try doing what MRTG or RRD currently does, it's
just a helper for filling in the initial data.
