So what I'm asking here is: in the light of all you intrepid pioneers' actual road experience, is the BB steering joint a good practical solution, or should I go back to looking for something beefier?

If you can find an old cartridge BB frame, use it instead.
If you don't even have an old frame and need to buy both BB shell and BB bearing, use a pair of tie rod ends.

P.S.: I welded up an adjustable position BB shell, and adjustable angle head tube, for my LWB last night.
