Sorry for your thumb. I feel a little responsible ;-)

Handle bars may help in the beginning. I have learnt
the airbike and the flevo by using handle bars.

Without handle bars the frustration rate might be
bigger in the beginning, but I am sure that you will
understand the driving principle earlier than by
using handle bars.

Peter made good progress by starting with low
gears and learning to let the bike roll without padelling,
so that the legs can concentrate on the steering act alone.

Anyway, the best thing is to ride totally relaxed and
not more than 2 x 1 hour per day during the first week.
