Hi Dirk,
I had a similar issue as Sten describes with the pivot of my python at first. It is not a base bracket, but it became a oval and showed play. I put a short pice of thight fitting very strong tube over both, the upper and lower end of the base bracket to make it more stable. Works all right since 10h of training on a car park and going 100km in "real live" including lots of bumps on Munich's cycle lanes. No noticeable play yet. On my pivot, the two additional pieces are aluminum tube with 5mm wall and about 3cm long. I guess in Steel less strong tube will suffice. Could be brazed around the base bracket to fill the gap.

This is the cours that the shell is unwinding itself during left-cornering. If you have plenty of hight you can built in a profesional bearing as used on mounten bikes. I did not have this, but leurned to live with it. You can give it a tack weld, but the clearens will stay.

In my "pythoon" the pivot is a bottom bracket. It keeps getting loose,
because the upper shell keeps unwinding (after 100kms I need to
re-thighten it). I know there are others which use this solution. Am I
the only one with this problem?
