The misalignment would have to be bad. The front tyre must be pointing
in the same direction as Gerald, most of the time, because where it
goes, Gerald follows. It isn't like the front tyres on a car or a
tadpole trike, which can scrub out quickly if the toe-in is wrong. And
some trikes have front wheels set up with a few degrees of negative
camber. There's no good reason for using negative camber, but the tyres
don't wear out very badly, just a bit off-centre.

If the tyre was new (as Gerald implies) it was probably defective. I
have noticed a few home-made recumbents with used tyres, some of them
very old and perished. In Australian conditions, tyres can suffer
severe ultra-violet damage if they are exposed to the sun for a few
years, and then don't last long in use. Cyclists too, but that's another
story.
