With a geared hub, the chain could be eliminated entirely. Thomas
Kretschmer and Robert Waryszak have looked at doing this, but they
concluded that it would require non-trivial (expensive) modifications of
the hub. There is a version of the Schlumpf drive which could be used
(intended for unicycles) but it gives only two gears.
