Hi Michael,
Welcome to the list. I, too and in California and you should be able to
find suitable sizes of square tubing locally unless you are in a very remote
area. Check your yellow pages for metal dealers. If you can't find it
locally there are several metal dealers online who can ship whatever you
need. Square and retangular tubing is usually a little easier to
weld/braze, but you can certainly use round tubing and just miter it to fit,
just as most commercial bike manufacturers do.
If you look around town you can probably find quite a few old bike that you
can cut up get whatever parts you may need. Over the past few months I have
collected about 25 old bikes, most are which were complete with wheels,
brakes, shifter, derailleurs, etc. I don't pick up junk frames, I usually
just wait till I find good ones with 3 piece cranks sets and freewheels that
are in reasonably good shape.
I had intended to build a python and it is still in my plans, however, I got
side tracked over the winter and spring and instead built a LWB recumbent,
three tadpole trikes and a kick bike. I'm still planning to build a python,
but I've got a couple of more projects that I have to finish first.
Good luck with your bike building.
