I really meant stress prevention; if the whole thing is hot to start with, it 
won't warp as much from welding. I heard that some of the Trek frames are truly 
stress-relieved by heating almost to glow, then quenching to restore temper.

Braze can bridge gaps, but you need a fine gas tip and care. I've filled holes 
in grilles and gas tanks before painting.

Not insane, maybe anal retentive... 
Seriously though, making a braze fillet might be a good idea to distribute 
stress at the joint.
