Erik,
Do a search for Win van Wijnen's Ecocar 2000, a centre steer bike, with
a virtual pivot axis passing through the rider, with actual hinges above
and below. I doubt if balancing has anything to do with placing the
hinge below the rider: it's all about construction. Can you explain
your direct drive? It looks a bit like Robert Waryszak's Python
Militaire, but what I take to be a cluster is very close to the driven
wheel.
