Brian,
remember here that the doubling of the thickness of a beam almost adds a
factor of seven wrt. stiffness for many materials. The reverse is naturally
also true. Add in the threads and the breakage factor due to them and you just
have too little material for the repeated loads perpendicular to the designed
load vector. You probably wouldn't think of laying a bike down on the curb with
the front fork fastener on the concrete curb and then weighing down the frame
with something weighing more than you do so that you could sit comfortably on
the tire. /*not only the spokes would be overstressed. */
One proviso: I am not an engineer! So these are my opinions and smatterings of
things I think I remember reading.
