We tried one of the first pythons with handlebars that wuld actually help
steer, but as you prdicted, they didn't help. Now, the bars serve two main
purposes. They primarily serve as mounts for the brakes and shifters, but
we use them in the secondary role of protecting the seat sides in crashes.

I'm not anywhere near the point where I've maxxed the speed potential and am
now looking for fine points to increase my cruising speed :) As mentioned
prior, the handle bar mounts under the seat are how we save the sides of the
mesh seat. What I want to do on my "final" python is run asingle stock up
between my legs, just behind the fender and in front of the seat, and have a
quick release on the T style handle bars. With this set up, I'll be able to
keep the bars out of the way while riding, they share the same wind shadow
as my torso, and it quickly allows me to separate the front and rear halves
of the python when required. I'll never use the bars for steering as I
agree with you that they aren't a requirement (but might come in hand for
emergency maneuvering). I'll modify the tailbox/storage compartment as well
so it is better aerodynamically designed. I used to keep my hands out to
the sides with my upper arms straight while I was learning, but now, I have
trained myself to be comfortable riding the bent with my hands always
resting on the controls . . . just in case :)
