handlebars might help if you are used to them. For reasons of weight and aerodynamics they are out of question for me.
The fender is a must with 26" wheels, though I am not sure if it has to be completely closed as mine. Gabriel's fender is only partially closed and he doesn't complain about dirt flying in his eyes, so it might work.
With your 20" wheels and no closed fender, do you have problems with dirt flying around your head?
