I highly recommend riding in Iowa!  We are not QUITE as "out in the sticks"
as you might think (I mean really, we DO have electricity and everything!
;-D) but we also have miles and miles of rural highways that are ideal for
riding!  and the people are pretty friendly too.  we don't really hit the
"Bike Friendly" thing too much, but as a general rule, it isn't a problem
either.  It also helps that we have the OLDEST and arguably largest bike
events in the world here.  RAGBRAI is a group ride that covers about 400
miles and there are about  10,000 riders each year.  So far it has been
going for 34 years and we are fairly comfortable with bikes on the roads.  I
am running a "team" this year.  "Team Wiz" or on line it is "wiztrike"
group.  hopefully it will be fun!

Yo, lots of bike paths here and some remainders of woodland. But
I think, our swedish friends are even better in this. My city
(Erlangen) is also known for its "bike friendliness". About 30%
of the local traffic is done by bike. I like it. But generally
Germany is a bit overpopulated and I guess it is easier to
find calmer places in Iowa.
