I lied. My Brompton has a Sturmey-Archer hub.
Got to love it anyway.

Hello Paul,
I have acquired a hub gear with a coaster brake, would this be
suitable for use on a Python?
The famous Monty from Olaf has a three gear hub with
coaster brake:

Also Jukkas first python:

They seem to work ok.
Problems I see are the small set of gears
If you commute on level ground and if speed record isn't on your
agenda, 3-gear hub will work nicely. You will have a clean design
with less greasy cogwheels and fewer cables. If you can afford the
weight penalty, there is always the 5 or 7-gear hubs.
I used Shimano Nexus on monty. The last two days I have been riding
a 3-geared Sram hub on my new Brompton, and I can already say that
this is a better choice,
and the limited
brake performance.
Aye, if you plan to brake your way down the Alps - bring a bucket
of water. The brake inside the 3-shift Nexus is not very strong.
You could of course double with a brake on the rear wheel.
Also you have to fiddle about
having the pedals in the correct position when starting.
I would say this is no problem. I never think of it.
The advantage is that you can brake with your feet
and don't need to take out the hands from your
coat pockets in cold winter days.
An even higher sense of freedom would be achieved with a two gear
hub that shifts through a slight back pedalling move. Thus
pedalling, braking and gear shifting would be assigned to your
feet. Imagine: While cycling you could pick your nose with both hands!
Don't forget that being able to shift while standing still is a big
advantage with a gear hub.
Also you can fully
enclosure the drivetrain if you like.
Why would one do that? It will only make chain greasing an even
peskier task than it already is.
Olaf
Cheers,
Jürgen.
