No, I will have only 31 cm from bb to hub, so the chain will not run smoothly.

See the attachment, when the pedal is pushed there will be a resulting force 
(green) which
wants to push the bb to the right side. It is like a seesaw. hub is the center 
of rotation, the
pivot with the body acts as counterforce. When A = B then the forces are 
balanced, if A > B
then it is even better.
