I have a mid-30s Leica IIIa that I bought for $25 in 1960. It always
had that problem at 1/1000th sec. A few years ago, when 1/500th stopped
working. I had the camera CLAed by John Maddox, who only repairs
screw-mount Leicas. It's worked perfectly ever since. AFAIK this was
the ONLY repair this camera ever had in it's nearly 70 year existance.
Maddox's contact information can be found in this listing of Leica
repair persons:

I also had him CLA my Leica IIIf and recommend him highly.
