[pure-silver] Re: newton ring problem figured out

Hi Shannon !
If you have the glass bevelled the other way, you may have a glass too small. Bring the carrier to the shop when asking for the job, as they will have to remove really a very few glass if you still want the glass to be large enough to fit the carrier. I hope my English is good enough to make myself clear. Please make a drawing to check what I'm saying because when the glass is gone, it's gone....
Have a nice day

It's not really "installed". You put it in when you use the 8x10 holder. There are two pieces: a bottom piece of plain glass, and a top piece that has one side rough and the other side smooth. But, the top piece is bevelled so that it can only go in the holder with the rough side UP, which is wrong.

I got this enlarger used after it had been at a lab for many years. They had made many weird modifications to it, most of which I had to undo and fix back. I am amazed they could make good prints at all, given the degree to which they had messed with the 108S Devere machine. For all I know, they just bought some anti-newton glass and had it bevelled wrong. Maybe I can take it to a glass place and have them bevel it the other way. I'll see when I go back to Houston.

The discussion on this list made me understand that the rough side
should be in contact with the film base side of the negative. But, in
my carrier, the way it is beveled forces you to put the top glass in so
that the smooth side touches the film base.

I guess the only solution is to have the glass re-beveled so that the
rough side is in contact with the film base side of the negative,
correct?

Is the glass installed wrong? Wouldn't be the first time somebody did
something upside down.
