I can explain why such an illogical thing would have happened. It's because the people that had this enlarger before me were not very smart. A lot of things about it were jerry-rigged by them. I think they had the glass beveled like this because they weren't aware of how it worked.

Maybe it was originally made to be the bottom glass. Although the bottom glass usually need not be anti-Newton ring, there must be applications for it so some would be made. I can't explain why it would be made in such a
way as to be impossible to use on top.
