Assuming you are photographing finished prints - that is mounted prints -
eliminate the mount using two L shaped thin black cards. Photograph in
diffuse daylight, I do mine in a conservatory ( sorry I don't know the
American for conservatory) using Fuji Sensia II film, and have them
processed and mounted. I find this method works fine, giving accurate colour
of B&W and toned prints.
If you mask slides, use Gepe mounts and cooking foil folded to get a smooth
edge, and held in place with tiny bits of Selotape. Ideal for making 'letter
box' landscapes.
