The D5 enlargers don't have the pins to match the notches so the frame thingy 
is pretty much necessary for accurate centering.

The D5 carriers differed in that on the bottom plate there is a raised  frame 
that settles into the opening where the carrier sits thereby centering  the 
carrier.  D2 etc carriers don't have that so you have to futz w/the  placement 
so that the carrier is properly centered.

     I thought the D-5 used the same holders as the D-2, are 
they  different?

     I must have both kinds of holders, some have the 
frame and some have just the notches at the back to locate them. Both work in 
the D2V but I don't know if the older type would work in the D5.
