Just to add, a public foundation here in Switzerland is photographing
old vinyl (or what was before ...) audio records on films (large format,
looked like 1:1 ratio) and they have developed a laser player able to
read these negatives and follow the image of the record groove ...
It was impressive that they were able to re-assemble broken discs, take
the picture and, after some (certainly impressive) digital work, restore
them.
Films were chosen for permanence reasons.
