Quite right about the green gunk, I think they used different grades of whale blubber ;)

Oh, noooo.... If they used whale blubber those helicoids would
still be spinning smoothly. I have a small bottle of Nyes Sperm
Oil I hoard for *very* *special* *uses*.

What does the 15 minutes of training involve?

Pipe wrench and Vaseline.

Make a scratch at 12:00 between the lens surround (the sort of lens-hoody
stepped black shiny bit around the lens) and the focusing ring (the part
that says 'Agfa Color Apotar ...') so you can line them up later.

Unscrew the three little screws holding the focusing ring - you only
have to loosen them - till the ring comes off.

The front section of the lens is now revealed.

*** Make more line-up marks from the front helicoid to the barrel and
the barrel to the shutter housing. ***

Unscrew the helicoid - this is where a pipe wrench may come in handy. If
possible make another scratch between the helicoid and the barrel just as
the helicoid comes loose. Sometimes the whole barrel comes free and then you have to separate the helicoid from the barrel. A bit of WD-40 in the helicoid
threads and a few days in a warm place will free a frozen helicoid.

Clean out the green gunk with a dental pick/toothpick/pin and wipe clean with a
swab and lighter fluid.

Lube with a small dab of grease. I have an Agfa I used Vaseline on about 45
years ago and it is still fine. For the purists - the best I know of is Dow
high-vacuum grease: space station lube. The next best is disc brake grease
- they sell little 3gm sachets in the car parts store for $3 (or a 1 lb.
tub for $8). There is optical helicoid grease but it's messy sticky
stuff that smells bad, gets on everything and is hell to clean off.

Reassemble, making sure the scratch marks line up again.

After you have done one or two the process is quick and simple.
