Re: [pure-silver] Re: flattening prints with no dry-mount pressHi Ralph,

Last time I flattened twenty 11 x 14 prints I put a stiff (1/2 inch plexi) board top and bottom and then two cases of beer on top. After three days flattened the prints like a charm. Bottom case was home made beer and the top case was a mixture of lagers. With so many prints I didn't want to waste a lot of time using my dry mount press. If any one wants more details on the beer let me know.

Dave

However, if one drinks the beer durring the time its stacked up its flattening power will be reduced and the prints will become progressivly blurry. Eventually they well become very difficult to see at all.

If you use an iron set it for the lowest setting which is usually marked "synthetics" or something similar. Using a sheet of mounting board works but make sure you dry the sheet out first. Remember, the press runs at around 200F so the iron should not be hotter than this. It certainly should NOT sizzle if you put a drop of water on it.
Kodak used to have instructions for dry mounting using an iron. It does work but should be recognized as a makeshift when a proper press is not available. Since I couldn't afford a press when I was starting out I did a lot of mounting this way. Probably an oven or meat thermometer (maybe a candy thermometer) could be used to check the temperature of the iron.
