[pure-silver] Re: duplicate info

The problem is he'll have to focus closer with the short lens. No? To get the
same size image on the negative the camera will need to be closer with the
55mm.

Nick,
I am not familiar with the characteristics of the Hasselblad 50mm lens that the original poster suggested he might use. It might be the biggest dog in history as far as distortion goes - but - being a Hasselblad I would guess that was not the case.

You are correct in the assumption that you would have to have a shorter working distance between lens and subject with the shorter lens. The two questions that should be answered in lens selection are 1) which lens gives me the largest image size on film. This will be determined by the design of the lens. What is the closest point the lens is designed to focus? Because of this consideration it might be found that with a closer focusing 50mm lens that you are able to get a larger image on film - with a shorter working distance - than you can with the longer lens. I suspect this is the case but having no knowledge of the characteristics of the Hassy lenses I cannot state this as fact. The second question is whether this lens (long or short) produces an image that is acceptable for the purpose intended.

You may be right that the longer lens is better. I don't know. IMHO the WA is the way to go but the first line in my original post was that others may have a better way of doing it. I think it is interesting to see how others would approach the same problem.

My personal approach would be to use a 4x5 and capture at larger than lifesize and then print from that...
