[pure-silver] beseler 23 c

Does anyone know the best way to restore the correct tension in the 
counterbalance spring on a beseler 23 c II?   Does the enlarger head have to be 
positioned at the mid point of the column as a starting point?   The 
instruction manual is as clear as mud.
