You should have been careful. You said silver halides in several
places and also brought up sulfide test for "residual silver."

If the fixer is bad, there is no hope.  If the fixer is good, then
good fixing time/agitation should give you good fixation and minimizes
the trouble later. I wouldn't argue to substitute one for another.
Instead, I generally recommend to check the fixing bath and tone all
important prints.
