[pure-silver] Re: Workbench advice

Visit as many other darkrooms as you can find, and ask the owner/user "What would you do differently if you were building this darkroom all over again?". I've found that it's not a requirement to have all the trays in a sink. But the sink should be big enough to comfortable contain your largest tray, and it should be at the end of the water proof counter where you use your trays. You can get pre-fab countertops with a backsplash and a small lip at the front at your local home center. Put a light-color, water resistant wall covering behind the 'wet area'. Behind the enlarger(s), use a dark-colored wall covering to avoid stray reflections. Use a floor covering that will withstand water and not get slippery- either a floor designed for bathrooms or a single sheet of linoleum/vinyl. (The single sheet is not too expensive, but it should be installed before moving in anything else.) The enlarger area should be very sturdy-- ideally, it would be cement blocks built on a concrete footing, with a solid concrete top-- but that's a bit unrealistic! Mine is a couple of base cabinets securely fastened to the wall, with a double (1.5") layer of laminated plywood top. Make some measurements of your enlarger and ceiling height, so that you don't have to make a hole in the ceiling to run the enlarger all the way up, like a darkroom that's really, really close to here! Good luck! I'm on Darkroom v5.0, and I still come up with stuff I'd do differently!

  Hi,

So now that you have seen what I call a darkroom, I would like some advice on how to proceed with the new and improved darkroom. Call it darkroom v2.0.

Where do you place your enlargers and trays ? Did you build a workbench ? Did you buy one ?

  Thanks

  J
