I always thought of APS as the first truly hybrid
analog/digital film.  The film allowed for the
recording of digital data which could tell the
processor things like colour balance etc, as well as
space to allow digital sound to be recorded along with
an analog image.  Although APS as a film format is
largely dead, the APS size digital sensor is a popular
sensor size for DSLRs.
