Subject: [pure-silver] Washing a Toned Print

I find the Kodak directions on the Selenium toner a bit confusing, maybe someone on the list can help me?

I rinse my FB paper according to the directions on my Adorama Hypo- Clearing agent. 5 min. in running water, 5 min. in HCA, 5 min. in running water. Then I tone for 6 minutes? Then for how long to rinse off the toner?

Thanks,

Elias

Kodak recommends different times for partly toned and fully toned prints. I am not sure why. KRST is mostly ammonium thiosulfate, i.e. rapid fixer. Since film or print toned in it must be neutral or alkaline in pH there is not the problem with binding of the thiosulfate that is the case after treating in an acid hardening fixing bath without a sulfite wash aid treatment. However, sulfite wash aid does substantially increase the washing rate of hypo even when in an alkaline state because it has a specific ion exchange property for thiosulfate. I suggest washing for what ever time is specified for film or prints when not toned by treated with wash aid. For RC papers 4 minutes in running water is sufficient even without wash aid.
