That news is already a few days old. The news was no surprised to
Japanese photographers as far as I can see on Japanese forums and
mailing lists.

Canon developed full-frame DSLR from early on, and continued full frame
EF series lens. I prefer Canon approach compared to others who went to
smaller formats for various reasons. Seriously, my 620 is still alive
and serves me well as a spare backup body. 1, 1N, etc. are still going
strong and reliable. Elan 7 series (EOS 7 outside North America) and 3
are also very good, reliable cameras. These cameras are abundant in used
market and I'm not worried about the news.

Other cameras, for example 630, Rebels, earlier Elans, etc. are
developing a serious problem due to deteriorating rubber bumber within
the shutter assembly. If anyone is shopping for spare EOS bodies, my
recommendation is to choose from 1 series, 3, 7 series or 620 (but not
other 600's). 600 series has another problem of draining battery, but
that can be solved in 5 minutes, by cutting TP2 and TP3 coming out of
the main power supply board in the bottom of the camera, visible after
removing the bottom plate.
