Canon says it will stop developing new film SLRs

According to The Associated Press, Canon Inc., <http://www.canon.com>
Tokyo, Japan, has stopped development of new film SLRs, due to the
growth of digital cameras, but will continue to manufacture models
already in the market.

Canon will continue manufacturing film cameras as long as there is
demand, but whether to withdraw from the film camera business will be
"decided appropriately by judging the market situation," said Canon
spokesman Hiroshi Yoshinaga.

Japanese camera makers sold a combined total 64.77 million digital
cameras last year globally, compared with 5.38 million film cameras,
according to Japanese industry figures. Yoshinaga said his company could
not disclose the number of cameras sold.

According to the report, Tsuneji Uchida, president of Canon, told
reporters demand for film cameras will be limited to "special needs"
like camera buffs, the Kyodo News agency said.

"It won't pay off as a business even if we would make a new
development" on a film camera, Kyodo quoted Uchida as saying.
