DEAR BOGDAN,
My compliments to all of you who live in the first world where your
ISPs are even remotely reliable.

Its Sunday, I will indulge a personal bug-a-boo. This is a figure of speech which seems to have gotten lost. Actually, its Old World, New World, Third World. Old world means Europe and England, the established civilizations preceding the United States. New World means mostly North America, the countries developed by the European explorers. Third world usually applies to everything else but especially to those parts of the world colonized by the Old World countries and suffering. It is not "first, second, third". Another bug-a-boo is "Carrot and Stick". This is often used to suggest reward and punishment but the original meaning is to coax action by offering a reward which can never be reached. It is from a cartoon showing a wagon being pulled by a donkey who is trying to reach a carrot held in front of its face on the end of a pole or stick, hense "carrot and stick". This is very different from the usual modern reference by people who _think_ they know the meaning but don't. Sorry Bob, I think I had better go back to bed (worked last night and am just up for a few minutes).
